Sir Kieran Prendergast is a British Diplomat and a former Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs at the United Nations. After graduating from St Edmund Hall, Oxford, he worked for the British Embassy in Turkey and was later posted to the NATO department at the British Foreign Office where he worked in Nicosia, Cyprus, and the Hague. Sir Kieran worked for the United Kingdom Mission to the United Nations and was appointed as the Consul General in Tel-Aviv, High Commissioner to Zimbabwe and Kenya, and the British Ambassador to Turkey. In 1997, the United Nations Secretary Kofi Annan appointed him Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs at the United Nations. During his tenure, Sir Kieran helped to bring attention to the human rights violations and “ethnic cleansing” taking place in Darfur from 2003 and was deeply involved in the Cyprus reunification negotiations. Since his resignation from the United Nations, he has conducted research at the Belfer Centre for Science and International Affairs and is a member of the Advisory Council for Independent Diplomat. He is also a Senior Advisor to the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue in Geneva.
