Scottish Public Law Group annouced that on the 29th September Christopher Vaida, QC, UK Judge at the European Court of Justice, will deliver a lecutre titled “The application of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights: Neither reckless nor timid?”, facilitated by Beyond Borders Scotland.

The event will be chaired by Professor Sir David Edward QC, former Judge at the European Court of Justice and Chairman of the Europa Institute and comment upon the lecture will be provided by Lord Hodge, Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom.

The European Union’s Charter of Fundamental Rights has attracted considerable attention in legal circles. It provides an extensive catalogue of rights and principles, some of which have not yet been fully defined and, while the Charter is applicable to all action by the European Union’s own institutions, its applicability in the legal orders of Member States is far from clear. This lecture offers a reflection on the application of the Charter in the recent case law of the European Court of Justice.

The event will be held at the Playfair Library, University of Edinburgh on 29 September 2014. Registration opens at 4pm and the lecture and opportunity for questions from the audience will run from 4.30 – 6.30pm, followed by a drinks reception. The event will be eligible for 1.5 – 2 hours CPD.

The Faculty of Advocates is hosting an event during the Edinburgh International Festival to look at the vital role played by the rule of law in world affairs. The event is a joint venture between the Faculty of Advocates and The Bar Council of England and Wales and is being facilitated by Beyond Borders Scotland.

Against a background of increasing turmoil in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa “The Rule of Law: What? Why? How?” will be chaired by the distinguished former Scottish judge Lord McCluskey. It will include major contributions from David Marshall from the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and Sir Jeffrey Jowell, Director of the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law, together with James Wolffe QC, Dean of the Faculty of Advocates. The venue for the event, which will count for 1.5 hours CPD, is the Laigh Hall, Parliament House. The event will take place on August 25 from 17.30 to 19.30 and will be followed by a drinks reception hosted by the Faculty.
