We are looking for volunteers aged 15 and upwards to work from the 17th-20th August at the festival Books, Borders, Bikes at Traquair House on the 18th and 19th August, in the beautiful Scottish Borders. Beyond Borders is also looking for volunteers to assist with a range of other events in the week beginning the 20th August including film screenings at the Edinburgh Filmhouse, and talks at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh.
Work:
We expect enthusiasm, a willingness to learn, and professional conduct. Jobs from set up/take down, stage management, stewarding, box office, hospitality in the green room, to meeting and greeting festival participants. Volunteers will work in groups of 2 for around 6 hours a day. During free time volunteers will be able to take enjoy the festival activities for free or simply enjoy the beautiful countryside.
Accommodation:
If you are not from the area and need to stay overnight, there will be an area for camping onsite, with toilet and shower facilities provided. Volunteers must bring WARM sleeping bags, blankets and roll mats. IT WILL BE VERY COLD CAMPING IN SCOTLAND IN AUGUST!!! Meals will be provided over the weekend.
Location:
The festival is based in the grounds of Traquair House on the river Tweed, the oldest continually inhabited house in Scotland and has been visited by 27 different Kings and Queens of Scotland and England. As such it occupies a beautiful but also strategic position in the upland and historically unruly borderlands separating Scotland and England. Traquair House is set in 100 acres of woodlands and garden. The house is in Innerleithen approximately 30 miles south of Edinburgh or an hour`s drive from the airport.
Transport:
We can provide transport from Edinburgh on the 17th and 18th, returning on the 19th or 20th, although it is helpful if you also have your own transport.
Nearest train station – Edinburgh Waverley (Approx 1 hour drive from Traquair.
By Bus – From St Andrews Bus Station in Edinburgh take the No 62 (departing every half hour) to Innerleithen and disembark at the Post Office on High Street. (journey time approx 1hr 20mins).
From Innerleithen – By foot it is 1.5 miles and takes about 20mins or by taxi Tel; 01896 831333.

Beyond Borders is also looking for volunteers to assist with a range of other events in the week beginning the 20th August including film screenings at the Edinburgh Filmhouse, and talks at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh. We are a small initiative, so our volunteers work closely with all members of the team, and have a wide range of talks including marketing and publicity, research and administration – and an input into the design of the festival programme itself. We are particularly looking for people who have an in literature, art and current affairs.
